Running the race for the first time Smith, a 32-year-old New Zealand native who lives in Rhode Island, ended the event with a time of 1:11:49.
Last year's record was 1:17:38.
In 2011, Smith ran the fastest half marathon ever by a woman in the U.S. with a time of 1:07:36.
She ran for New Zealand in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
“It’s just a fun event and pretty low-key for an elite athlete to do. But definitely a lot of fun and I’d recommend it to people out there," Smith said in a news release.
Kimberly Ruck and Alyssa Kulik, two sisters from South Carolina, finished second and third place, respectively nearly 15 minutes behind Smith.
