6 Disney photos from World War II

Posted on 19:27 by the great khali
When the United States entered World War II, the Walt Disney Studios became a place the government turned to help develop a number of training, educational and propaganda films.

In all, Disney produced over 68 hours of films ranging from aircraft production to encouraging the purchase of war bonds to morale boosting shorts like Der Fuehrer's Face. See some of the films here.

Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other characters could also be seen painted on many aircraft as Disney created about 1,200 insignias for the U.S. military, many for Naval units. The most requested character - Donald Duck.

Take a look at some of the Disney movies from that era:

1. British Minister of Food Frederick Marquis (1883 - 1964), with a cartoon and a figure of Mickey Mouse sent by the Walt Disney Studios to help with the ministry's wartime food campaigns.

3. From November 1942, a pilot in his Lancaster bomber - Admiral Prine - prior to take off.

4. A 1942 photo o  a British Coastal Command pilot at the  cockpit window as his plane shows a sketch of Donald Duck battering a U-boat.

5. A 1943 photo of Walt Disney in Hollywood looking over a story board for one of the films being made for the Army.

6. A U.S. Navy Department of ship poster entitled "Why Help Gremlins?' depicts two vingettes; the first, labelled "Square Corners and Gremlins Play," features a gremlin as it uses a crowbar to widen a crack in a corner, and the second, labelled "Round Corners, They Stay Away," shows an oblivious gremlin as it walks along, May 1, 1944. During World War II, a concerted campaign was made to reduce cracks in the metal of ships during contruction; rounding corners was one solution. The mischevious gremlin was a concept popularized by British author Roald Dahl in his children's book 'The Gremilins," about mythical creatures who damaged airplane parts, which was adapted for a film by Walt Disney; though it was not made, the gremlin depicted here is very similar to early production sketches.

5 propoganda films Disney created for the WWII effort

Posted on 19:26 by the great khali
During World War II Walt Disney produced over 68 hours of propaganda films for the U.S. government.

Between 1942 and 1945, Disney used Donald Duck, Pluto and even the Seven Dwarfs for various pro-American war films to increase the support for the war. The various departments Disney made films for were The Treasury Department, to help finance the war, the U.S. Navy and The Army Air Forces.

Beware that under today's social standards, many of these films, particularly "Education For Death" my be considered a bit disturbing. (In addition her are some Disney photos from that era.)

Here are five of these films:

1. Out of the Frying Pan into the The Firing Line (1942): Made for the U.S. War Production Board, this film shows the importance of saving waste fats to make into explosives.

2. Der Fuehrer's Face (1943): This movie starring Donald Duck was released as an anti-propaganda film from Walt Disney Studios. The film won the 1943 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. It is the only Donald Duck cartoon to win an Oscar.

3. Education For Death (1943): Is a grim story based on the anti-Nazi war propaganda book writen by Gregor Ziemer. The story follows the birth of young Hans and how he and other children in Nazi Germany are educated from a a young age to become merciless soldiers.

4. All Together (1941):  Not only did the Walt Disney Studios do work for the U.S. government, it also produced this short for the Canadian government in an effort for people to purchase Canadian War Bonds. Here a parade of Disney characters, from Mickey Mouse to Donald Duck to the Seven Dwarfs are used in this short.

5. Commando Duck (1944): Donald Duck is ordered to wipe out a Japanese airfield. But as soon as Donald parachutes from the plane, the normal Donald mayhem ensues.

Inside the original Disneyland prospectus

Posted on 13:53 by the great khali
The original vision of Disneyland by Walt Disney and how it would end up looking is quite different.

You can see the differences now that original prospectus written by Walt Disney to get financing or Disneyland is out making the rounds.

Boingboing first wrote about this, presenting the prospectus for all to see from an anonymous benefactor. The full prospectus can also be found on arhvive.org.

The 1953 prospectus was created feverishly over a weekend by Walt Disney and artist Herb Ryman. Disney was planning to go to New York City and visit three banks to help finance his dream. So, the two started on a Friday night to be able to have something Walt could hand over to the bankers. By Sunday they created three copies and off Walt went to try and get some money.

The document is one of a kind, it appears it was left with the bankers. This copy was discovered at an estate sale on Long Island in New York in the early 1980s and has been in the same owner's hands since 1984. It went up for auction and in 2012, Glenn Beck purchased the copy and talked about it on his show.
This is the only copy known to exist. Neither the Disney Archives or the Disney Museum have a copy of this.

The document holds a drawing of what Disneyland might look like and nine pages of type explaining what would be in this park. In many ways, the original pitch sounded like a combination theme park/television studio. The pitch promised that three TV shows broadcast from the park.

A good portion of what was in Walt's head that was placed in the proposal came to fruition. And like with many ideas, there has been tinkering along the way. Here is a summary of what areas would be included in the park:

Railroad Station: This was a must. Walt's love of trains made this an absolute.

Main Street: Under the proposal, an Old Opera House would be the location for the filming of The Walt Disney Television Show.

The Hub: The central location to head to anywhere win the lands. This remains the major design ingredient for all parks.

True-Life Adventureland: This was where you would embark on a boat for a trip down the River of Romance.

World of Tomorrow: A moving sidewalk would bring people to this location, which would be the home to the World of Tomorrow Television Show.

Lilliputian Land: Does this sound familiar?  "A miniature Americana village inhabited by mechanical people nine inches high who sing and dance and talk to you as you peek through the windows of their tiny shops and homes. In LILLIPUTIAN LAND there is an Erie Canal barge that takes you through the famous canals of the world, where you visit the scenic wonders of the  world in miniature ..."

This sounds a lot like what would eventual become the famous "It's a Small World" attraction which debuted in 10 years later at the 1964 New York World's Fair and then moved to Disneyland.
This sounds a lot like what would eventually become "it's a small world" attraction, which debuted in 1964 at the World's Fair.

Fantasy Land: The plan was already in place with a ride-through of Snow White's Adventures, a flying Peter Pan ride and a walk-through Alice in Wonderland area.

Recreation Land: "A shady park set aside for reservations by clubs, schools or other groups for picnics and special outings."

Frontier Country:  "Along FRONTIER STREET is a Harness Shop and a Blacksmith Shop, Livery Stable, Assayer' s office, Sheriff's Office and the jail. You can get real Western food at the Chuck Wagon, and cowboy clothes, six-shooters or a silver-mounted saddle for your horse or pony at the General Store."

Mickey Mouse Club:  Located on Treasure Island, this area would be the world headquarters for The Mickey Mouse Club and be where the The Mickey Mouse Club Television Show would be produced.

Holiday Land: A place for special and seasonal attractions.

Now, the thing to remember is that Walt never got any money from the banks to finance the park. Banks do not bankroll dreams. The idea of the three TV shows was brilliant on his part, because in the end, it was television which bankrolled the park.

Disney made a with ABC that allowed him to get his television show on the air and ABC took some ownership in the park. It was free advertising for the construction of the park. The rest of the money came from the  famed licensing agreements Disney made with companies to become officials sponsors. A practice which continues to this day.

But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind."

Disney Smile of The Day: Photos of Cars Land's Ornament Valley at night

Posted on 18:43 by the great khali
The Ornament Valley mountain range at Cars Land is a phenomenal sight during the day, but don't forget to walk past it during the night.

The 280,000 square feet of rockwork at the California Adventure at Disneyland looks phenomenal at night. The range contains six car tail fins inspired by classic car models from 1957 to 1962, hood ornaments, wheel wells and radiator caps.

Here is a look:
